Mythologies of the Ahousaht Tribe

The Ahousaht First Nation is a First Nation government based on the west coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. It administers the community of Ahousaht, British Columbia, which encompasses much of Clayoquot Sound. The Ahousaht are a member of the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council. It is led by Chief A-in-chut (meaning 'everyone depends on you') Shawn Atleo and the Taayi Haw̓ił - Maquinna (Lewis George). Ahousaht has about 2,214 members, and about 36% live in Marktosis Indian Reserve No. 15 on Flores Island. ("Marktosis" is an English transliteration of Maaqtusiis, the name of the reserve in the Nuu-chah-nulth language). The Ahousaht Nation is the most populous First Nation on the west coast of Vancouver Island. The Ahousaht First Nation is the largest among the Nuu-chah-nulth Nation. The Nation is a confederation of multiple former tribes: the Ahousaht (ʕaaḥuusʔatḥ), Manhousaht (Maan̓uusʔatḥ), Kelthsmaht (qiłcmaʔatḥ), Paneetl-aht (Paniiƛʔatḥ), Qwatswiaht (Qʷaacwiiʔatḥ), O-inmitisaht (Ḥuuʔinmitisʔatḥ), and Otsosaht (ʕuc̓uusʔahtḥ). These tribes began to join as a confederation before the arrival of the Europeans to their respective shores. Andrew Paul is the chief of Ahousaht.

Ahousaht (Ahousat) is a Nuu-chah-nulth First Nation residing on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The word Ahousaht means “facing opposite from the ocean” or “people living with their backs to the land and mountains” in the Nuu-chah-nulth language. It is the largest of all the Nuu-chah-nulth nations, with a population of 2,224 in 2021. Historically, the Ahousaht were a small nation located on the outer coast of Vargas Island in British Columbia. In the early 19th century, the Ahousaht, with firearms obtained from other Indigenous kinsmen, likely Nuchatlaht and Mowachaht, conquered the much larger Otsosaht nation and took their territories of Flores Island, Millar Channel and Herbert Inlet. As a result of warfare, intermarriage and other factors, the Ahousaht absorbed some neighbouring nations, including the Otosaht, the Manhousaht of Sydney Inlet and Shelter Inlet, and the Kelsomaht of the east coast of Vargas Island. These nations formally amalgamated with the Ahousaht in the 20th century. Today, Ahousaht territory is located between the lands of the Hesquiaht to the north and the Tla-o-qui-aht to the south. The most populated Nuu-chah-nulth nation, Ahousaht has 2,224 members and 25 reserve sites. About one third of Ahousaht members live on traditional territory.

Ahousaht, also spelled Ahousat (/əˈhsɑːt/ or /əˈhzæt/), is the principal settlement on Flores Island, in British ColumbiaCanada. Accessible only by water or air, Ahousaht is a small community predominantly composed of First Nations people from the Nuu-chah-nulth nation. The settlement is named for the Ahousaht subgroup of the Nuu-chah-nulth, whose modern Indian Act government is the Ahousaht First Nation which combines the Ahousaht, Manhousaht and Keltsmaht under one administration. The other main settlement of the Ahousaht First Nation is at Marktosis.

Ahousaht is the largest of the Nuu-chah-nulth nations with over 2000 members. Located in a small bay on the east side of Flores Island in Clayoquot Sound is the village of Maaqtusiis where roughly 1/3 of their members reside. The traditional territories of the Ahousaht people are bordered by the Hesquiaht and Tla-o-qui-aht nations to the north and south respectively. These territories, within and beyond the Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Reserve, are home to an incredibly diverse ecosystem and a rare ancient temperate rain forest. The Ahousaht people have lived in harmony with these territories since time immemorial guided by an understanding of the Nuu-chah-nulth worldview, “Hishuk ish tsawalk” which means “everything is one.”
