The Hmong tribe ( RPA : Hmoob , CHV : Hmôngz , Nyiakeng Puachue : 𞄀𞄩𞄰 , Pahawh Hmong : 𖬌𖬣𖬵 , IPA: [ m̥ɔ̃́ ] , Chinese : 苗族蒙人 ) are an indigenous group in East and Southeast Asia . In China, the Hmong people are classified as a sub-group of the Miao people . The modern Hmong reside mainly in Southwestern China and Mainland Southeast Asian countries such as Vietnam , Laos , Thailand , and Myanmar . There are also diaspora communities in the United States , Australia , France , and South America . The term Hmong is the English pronunciation of the Hmong's native name. It is a singular and plural noun (e.g., Japanese, French, etc.). The Giáy tribe ( Vietnamese : người Giáy [ ŋɯɤi˨˩ zɑi˧˥ ] ), known in Laos as the Nhang or Yang , are an ethnic group in Vietnam and Laos . Most live in the mountainous northern provinces of Lào Cai , Hà Giang , Lai Châu , and Cao Bằng . In 2019 the population was 67,858. The Giáy speak the Bouyei language , a member of the Tai language family . Literacy is low in their native language, however, most Giáy can also speak and write Vietnamese , which they learn in primary school. The Giáy traditionally cultivate rice in paddy fields using simple technology. Water buffalo are raised as draft animals and are used to plow the land. Chickens and pigs are raised for food.
