Mythologies of the Kamiguin Tribe

The people of Camiguin are called "Camiguingnon." The main occupation of the people is fishing and farming, with copra providing the greatest income contribution. Dialects spoken in Camiguin are Cebuano and Hiligaynon, while a few people speak Kinamiguin, an ancient tribal dialect. English is spoken widely amongst the population. The people of Camiguin are friendly and hospitable. Visitors are most commonly greeted by the locals with 'hi!' and a big smile.The people of Camiguin are also friendly, fun-loving, hard-working, and very hospitable. The island province registered a total population of 75 thousand. The name Camiguin is derived from the native word “Kamagong”, a tree of the Ebony family that thrives near lake Mainit in the Province of Surigao del Norte. The original inhabitants of Camiguin were “manobos” who migrated from Surigao. According to the last census in 2000 it had a population of around 3000. They live in a few villages in the mountains and along the coast. The Eskaya have a unique language and writing system that scholars have not been able to link to any other known language. They also have a unique oral history (or mythology depending on who you ask) dating back to biblical times. They believe that people originated from a butterfly called Pinya Paypay Pling. In some way (that is not clear to me) the butterfly interacted with a lion and lioness who gave birth to a monkey. That monkey mated with another and gave birth to the first humans. “ Capiznon ” is derived from the word  kapis , a seashell obtained from the mollusk Placuna placenta and used to make square panes for windows, and the suffix  non , meaning “people.” The term refers to the culture, language, and people of Capiz province, one of Panay Island’s four provinces: Iloilo, Capiz , Antique, and Aklan. Capiz is bounded by the Sibuyan Sea in the north, Aklan province in the northwest, Antique province in the west, and Iloilo province in the south and southwest. As of 2007, its population was 701,664, making it the third most populous province in the region. Its capital is Roxas City; its municipalities are Cuartero, Dao, Dumalag, Dumarao, Ivisan, Jamindan, Maayon, Mambusao, Pan-ay, Panit-an, Pilar, Pontevedra, President Roxas, Sapian, Sigma, and Tapaz.  The Capiznon people belong to a larger group called Visayan, and the  Capiznon language  is a subclassification of the Visayan language.
